Himalayan salt for Spicy Dry Rub

One of my favorite experiences when grilling or firing up the barbecue is the inevitable inquiry about whether I make my own rubs from scratch. And typically when I say yes, it seems to evoke a sense of wonder, as if the idea of making a homemade rub is steeped in ancient secrets. Spicy Dry Rub with Himalayan salt is one of my favorite things to do.
Styles of barbecue vary, and like everyone’s palate, can be incredibly subjective. Understanding what can be created through the combination of salt and other ingredients can get anyone to a comfort zone in creating a homemade rub in your own personal style.
What is a rub? Technically it’s a combination of dry ingredients for enhancing the flavor of your item being cooked – in this case, barbecue.
Himalayan salt for Spicy Dry Rub Ingredients
- ½ cup brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup Himalayan Salt
- ¼ cup paprika
- 3 table spoons smoked paprika
- 2 tablespoons hot chili powder
- 3 tablespoons ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon powdered garlic
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon cayenne powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground mace
Himalayan salt for Spicy Dry Rub Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment and spread the brown sugar on the baking sheet to dry for 1 to 2 hours
- Transfer the sugar to a food processor and add the remaining ingredients
- Pulse until the mixture is well blended
- Store in an airtight container
- To use, sprinkle over meat and rub it in
- Wrap the meat in plastic and chill for 1 hour before cooking
