Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with unpaired electrons. Because electrons like to exist in pairs, free radicals try to steal electrons from other molecules in order to even out their odd number. In the process, these highly reactive substances can start unwanted chain reactions of free-radical formation in the body. The main threat in this scenario is the terrible damage free radicals can do to important cellular components, including DNA. Although free radicals can harm cells, there are nevertheless an essential part of life and are constantly being created by the body. They can be formed in a number of ways, but perhaps the most common of free radicals, known as the reactive oxygen species (ROS), is made simply through the normal process of metabolism.

It is generally thought that the antioxidant in these foods are responsible for their protective properties, as many fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidant vitamins and minerals. Research, however, is ongoing, and thus far inconclusive, as to whether antioxidant supplementation can be of use against sickness.

In relation to the important superoxide dismutase (SOD), the effects of negative-ion therapy were studied in rate, bovine, man, and duck subjects. After being treated with negative ions (mostly superoxide) from an ion generator, subjects of the study displayed markers of increased levels of superoxide dismutase. In other words, researchers found that exposure to negative ions raised levels of the protective antioxidant superoxide dismutase. The authors of this study stated, “The stimulation of SOD activity by [negative air ions] NAI found in our experiments allows the understanding of the broad beneficial effects of [negative air ions] NAI.” Negative ions, therefore, may have a role to play in protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals as well as the health issues associated with it.
