The Benefits of Negative Ions for Cardiovascular Health

High levels of cholesterol in the blood (hypercholesterolemia) have been strongly linked to cardiovascular disease, as they result in atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries. Although pharmaceutical companies have been treating this problem with cholesterol-lowering drugs for years, the use of negative ions to remedy this issue in a more natural way has shown promise for decades. As early as 1965, research has shown that negative ions have the ability to reduce blood cholesterol levels.
In 1975, young athletes treated with negative ions displayed increases in cardiovascular and respiratory adaptations to physical effort. The pulse, blood pressure, and respiration frequency of each athlete returned to normal levels sooner than expected. Around this time, Russian scientist F.G. Portnov was also looking into the effects of negative-ion therapy. He found that exposure to negative ions demonstrated an ability to dilate blood vessels, known as vasodilation. When blood vessels relax and dilate, blood pressure lowers, as does stress on the cardiovascular system. (In addition, vasodilation may relieve migraines as well.) This mechanism was described in a 1985 study published in Life Sciences, which showed that 5-hydroxytryptophan, a precursor of serotonin, lowered blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner and in direct relation to the production of brain serotonin. It is clear that serotonin has a role in blood pressure regulation. The ability of negative ions to regulate serotonin levels, therefore, makes them a powerful again in cardiovascular health.

In 2000, Dr.Yamada and Dr.Chino published a paper that described a study in which eight-week-old mice were fed high-cholesterol food for six days. One group of mice was exposed to negative ions and one group was not. The red blood cells of the negative-ion group displayed a separation and smoothness, while the red blood cells of the untreated group did not, suggesting beneficial cardiovascular outcomes in association with negative-ion therapy for individuals dealing with high cholesterol.
